What to do with an old UPS. Let's find out what can be done from an old uninterruptible power supply from a computer

UPS (source uninterruptible power supply) is a device that supplies a specific system with electric current in cases where there is no energy in the main network. Such batteries are used in various equipment and technology. They are most often seen in offices, stationary power systems and server rooms. Essentially, UPS creates the minimum necessary conditions to keep devices operational when power outages occur.

The useful life of batteries for uninterruptible power supplies is 3-5 years, after which the device is replaced with a new one. It is prohibited to throw batteries into a landfill, as during the process of decomposition they begin to release toxic substances into the ground and air. You can help the environment and make good money if you donate your battery to our company. We accept UPS batteries according to the most high prices in Moscow and Moscow region. The list of services provided and the current price list for scrap metal can be found in the relevant sections of the website.

Application areas for UPS batteries

The main component of an uninterruptible power supply is the battery. It is capable of accumulating, storing and expending energy in emergency situations. They contain various non-ferrous metals. Typically these are lead, iron and copper, but some devices use nickel, cadmium and antimony. It turns out that handing over the battery at a specialized collection point is beneficial.

All existing types of UPS batteries are divided into 3 main groups:

  • Lead. They are used for constructing autonomous and backup systems with standard and alternative energy sources.
  • Nickel-cadmium (alkaline). Batteries of this type are used in various highly specialized equipment and machines: trains, subways, carriages, elevators.
  • Gel. The average service life of such batteries reaches 10 years, thanks to the implementation of the redistribution of hydrogen and oxygen. The devices are different increased security, stable under powerful discharges, explosion-resistant and have a wide range of operating temperatures. These factors have led to the widespread use of gel batteries in the construction of residential autonomous power systems.

In addition to batteries from UPS, our company can deliver other types of batteries: automobile, traction, in ebonite cases.

Battery acceptance conditions

To hand over batteries as scrap, the following conditions must be met:

  • We accept batteries without visible damage in a non-disassembled form. When estimating the cost of scrap, the weight of non-metallic inserts is not taken into account.
  • Lead and nickel-cadmium appliances should have minimal clogging.
  • Alkaline batteries must be empty - no acid.

Preparing batteries for delivery is not difficult. If any difficulties arise, just call us for qualified advice.

Why recycle old batteries?

Substances contained in UPS batteries cause irreparable harm to nature. Such devices have a second class of danger, but dozens of batteries end up in landfills every day. Toxic components accumulate in the ground, then seep into the water and evaporate into the air. Animals and plants become carriers of serious diseases, increasing the risk of infection among the population.

Our company provides you with the opportunity to be conscious of the problem of environmental pollution. Everyone has the right to take unwanted batteries to our specialized collection points and get good money for it.

Convenient disposal of used batteries

Our company buys batteries from UPS at best prices in Moscow and the surrounding area. In addition, we provide a number of related services that allow you to get rid of old scrap as quickly and comfortably as possible. We are engaged in:

  • removal of scrap metal;
  • dismantling old metal structures;
  • dismantling of cars and engines.

Selling batteries is another area of our business, so if you want to sell your old battery and immediately buy a new battery, just call us.

Many PC users have old UPSs that have expired. A common cause of disability is battery failure. Since replacing with new batteries is unprofitable, and sometimes simply impossible due to the lack of analogues, these devices are simply lying around idle or thrown into the trash.

But you can give a second life to the UPS by making it a very useful device - an inverter that converts 12 in the car’s on-board network into the 220 V required for some devices. Despite the fact that the factory version of the inverter will cost a lot of money, this way you will save money and make the right thing out of trash.

So, the first thing to do is remove the old, leaking batteries. They can be easily dismantled by removing the bottom cover and disconnecting the power wires. If there are traces of leaked electrolyte, clean the case from oxidation crystals.

This operation will ensure the elimination of further acid leakage and will also significantly lighten the weight of the apparatus.

Changing the connection diagram

Uninterruptible power supplies differ in design, but their operating principle is the same - converting 12 V to 220 V. That is, each model contains a board with an electronic voltage converter. That's what we need. But there is one condition: it must be working.

Since the devices that will be connected to this device have a standard 220 V plug, it is necessary to install a regular household socket for hidden wiring on the side or rear panel. It is to this that we solder the output wires from the 220 V converter, which previously fit into special three-arm plugs on the back panel of the UPS.

In the first and second cases, the wires are soldered to those that went to the UPS battery. It is very important to maintain the polarity of the connection. The red wire is positive and the black wire is negative.

Both in the car network and in the UPS, these colors must match. It is best, of course, to check the polarity with a multimeter to be sure.

This connection scheme provides for immediate operation of the device when it is connected. If you want to turn it on via a toggle switch or machine, then simply break the “plus” in the wire coming from the car’s battery and connect one wire to the input and the other to the output of the machine attached to the UPS case. This cuts off the power to the inverter when needed.

Subtleties at work

It should be understood that such a device will not produce much power. Usually. it is no more than 150 W, but this is quite enough to connect a small TV, laptop and other low-current equipment.

Why is the car battery not charging from the charger?

Everyone is probably familiar with the situation when, when changing equipment to a newer one, you don’t know what to do with the old one, which has already become obsolete, but quite good so far. If there is no need to use the old computer for its intended purpose, then you can come up with new purposes for its components. For this, it will be useful to know what can be made from a UPS for a computer.

An old uninterruptible power supply can turn into many devices based on a quick fix. Among other things, among them should be especially note useful in everyday life:

  • Charger;
  • simple inverter;
  • UPS for gas boiler;
  • 12 volt source (for radio and other purposes).

Charger

To make a charger from an old uninterruptible power supply, you need to proceed as follows:

  1. firstly, the primary and secondary circuits of the transformer are determined;
  2. 220 V is supplied to the primary by inserting a voltage regulator into the circuit (a rheostat for a light bulb is suitable);
  3. a bridge of approximately 40-50 amperes is connected to the secondary winding of the transformer;
  4. connect the terminals and the corresponding battery poles.

Voltage calibration will be carried out with an improvised regulator within 0-15 volts.

You will have to control the charge level according to the indicator or using a voltmeter.

Simple inverter

A transformer without a battery will make a working inverter for a car. The assembly process will proceed according to the following scheme:

  1. disassembling the uninterruptible power supply: removing the battery, biting off the terminals, stripping the ends;
  2. searching for a connector for connecting to the network (if there is a connector, it should be removed; if not, the wires are bitten off the board and the ends are stripped);
  3. The wires from the battery must be connected using a soldering iron to the wires from the connector located on the rear panel; the soldering points are not isolated;
  4. The cigarette lighter socket is soldered to the device, observing polarity and insulating the soldering points;
  5. excluded internal speaker devices (teared off with pliers or the board is removed);
  6. assembling the case by adding standard sockets (for some UPSs they are already included in the original design).

UPS for gas boiler

A computer UPS is also suitable for a gas boiler. Conversion process should be done as follows:

  1. deletion faulty unit nutrition;
  2. creating contact clamps taking into account polarity (it is better to make clamps of different colors to indicate plus and minus) by making 2 holes, fixing the contact clamps and soldering to them previously suitable indoor unit computer power cables;
  3. to prevent premature failure of the device due to overheating, you will need to install fans with or without a housing, connected in series (to start them, it is recommended to use an LED, soldering its leads to the winding of a small relay, and to one of the relay contacts you will need to solder a wire from the incoming “+” battery battery, and to the second - a free red wire from the fan, another free black wire is soldered to the negative of the battery).

12 volt source

A failed uninterruptible power supply Can be adapted to a 12 volt source. This is done very simply. First, you will need to connect an outlet to the UPS cord. To do this, one end is initially cut off from it. After performing this procedure using an uninterruptible power supply You can now charge your phone. By further simple transformations described above, you can increase the power homemade device(see the part about the inverter).

Why recycle old UPSs?

Every person should know that an old battery is a hazardous waste that can harm the environment and human health. The substances that make up the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) are extremely dangerous and toxic. Such a device, once in a landfill, releases toxic components into the soil and water, poisoning everything around it. Lead is especially dangerous. This metal slows down plant growth and also causes serious illness in animals and humans.

Everyone can use a UPS, but few know how to recycle it

This is why it is important to dispose of the device correctly. Simply throwing the battery in a landfill, much less storing it at home or in the garage, will not be enough. It is necessary to hand over the battery to a collection point so that experienced employees can dispose of it in accordance with all safety rules.

Benefits of UPS Recycling

By handing over your old power supply to a collection point, you can:

  • Safely get rid of unnecessary things;
  • Opportunity to protect the environment;
  • Provide industrial enterprises with material (all delivered UPSs ultimately end up in processing plants, where lead and plastic are extracted from them and new devices are manufactured);
  • Receive a decent reward for each battery sent for recycling.

What is a UPS

General information

A UPS (UPS) is an uninterruptible power supply that can supply power to other devices if there is no current in the main power supply.

They are often used in offices, where unplanned shutdown of computers is unacceptable due to the risk of losing important data, as well as in everyday life. In addition, uninterruptible power supplies are also used in other systems, for example, in server networks. In general, the UPS creates the necessary conditions to maintain the functionality of devices in the event of power outages, safely save data and turn off equipment.

The UPS has a service life of 3-5 years, after which the device must be disposed of at the nearest collection point.

After seven years of use, any UPS must be disposed of

Design and types of uninterruptible power supplies

UPS typically contains metals such as nickel, iron, antimony, cadmium, copper and lead. The main element of the UPS is the battery. It is she who accumulates the necessary energy.

UPS batteries are divided into 3 main groups:

  • Lead;
  • Nickel-cadmium (alkaline). Mainly used in trains, subways, carriages, elevators;
  • Gel. They are used in the construction of residential autonomous power systems.

Where to take the old UPS

Today you have several opportunities to hand over your uninterruptible power supply. First, go to an auto parts store. Some car dealerships are engaged in purchasing failed batteries, including UPS. However, check in advance whether such a device is accepted.

Secondly, you can take the battery to a specialized collection point for batteries or scrap metal. On this moment There are similar organizations in every city. This option is much more profitable in terms of profit, since in acceptance prices for old UPSs are usually higher than in car dealerships.

How to choose a collection point

To find a collection point, you can use search engine our website:

To view collection points in your city, click the "Select recyclables and city" button located on the right and select your city. You will be able to familiarize yourself with prices, addresses and telephone numbers, and based on this, choose the acceptance that suits you best.

Attempts to revive the UPS do not always lead to the desired result

UPS acceptance rules

When going to a collection point to recycle your uninterruptible power supply, you must consider the following requirements:

  • The device must be unassembled and without damage;
  • It is advisable to wipe the outside of the device from dust and dirt;
