How to find out if a domain name is available. Whois service

The starting stage of website publication is checking the availability of the domain name. A correctly selected online name largely determines the time of its initial indexing by search engines, the rate of increase in visitors and, in general, the entire future success of the Internet resource.

Things to consider when checking your address:

  1. First of all, the domain name must be free: this can be checked using any WHOIS service. If the domain was previously occupied, it is important to look at the history - how exactly the former owner used the domain, what information he posted.
  2. The website address on the Internet should be short (preferably no longer than 7-10 characters), easy to read and remember by users. In order to check how convenient the chosen domain will be for visitors, try dictating it to someone over the phone. The interlocutor must be able to write it down without errors.
  3. The domain name must contain an emphasis on the subject of the site or the type of activity of the services offered.
  4. Use only those foreign words that are widely known and will be understood by all visitors (shop, auto, top, etc.). Not everyone knows a foreign language and the rules for writing certain words perfectly.
  5. If a website represents a brand, the domain must reflect this and be recognizable. In this case, you should not perform ordinary transliteration for complex multi-component names. So, for example, for the organization “Western Thermal Generating Company” it is better to choose the abbreviated address z-teplo.ru rather than the full name in Latin characters.
  6. If all suitable domains are already taken, try checking the domain by including numbers. Thus, the address okna24.ru is in no way inferior to the domain okna.ru.
  7. Experts advise registering domains in several zones at once (RU, SU, COM) and “gluing” them together by setting up redirection to the main site. This increases the position of the resource and protects against the risk of cybersquatting. Therefore, before you take a domain for yourself, do a massive name check in other zones: perhaps a similar brand already exists.

The most recognizable domain zones

  1. RU. Regional zone of the Russian Internet region. The most common option for sites aimed at Russian-speaking audiences. Suitable for all areas: commercial resources or personal online blogs. The area to check first.
  2. RF. Cyrillic equivalent of RU. Less busy, but may cause difficulty navigating to sites in older browsers. A website address like “namesite.rf” is easy to remember.
  3. COM. Initially, only commercial websites of organizations were included in the zone, but now anyone can choose it. It is recommended to check for multilingual platforms and resources operating internationally.

On Majordomo you can check a domain for availability in all zones - RF, RU, COM, ORG, NET, RUS, SU, TECH, ONLINE, STORE, SITE and others.

RU-CENTER is one of the largest registrars on the Russian market since 2001. We provide services for registration, renewal and transfer of support for information about domain names in more than: national, international and thematic.

To do this, enter the query you are interested in in the search bar and click “Check”. The list of results will show available names in domain zones with a price for the first year - all available, from the most to the most expensive. Our selection will allow you to check whether a specific domain is free if you enter it in its entirety in the search bar.

Select the appropriate option from the search results by category or the entire list, place and pay for your order. These are valid for the first year of registration and may differ from the cost of the domain upon renewal.

After the money is received, the domain name is registered in the central database (Register) - the administrator indicates the individual or organization that has entered into an agreement with RU-CENTER.

After registration, management and all information about the domain become available in the “For Clients” section.

Rules for choosing a domain name

Our domain name selection system helps you find the best name for your website.

We understand that you are a busy person, so we tried to make the process of selecting and registering domains as simple and fast as possible. You can check domains in several domain zones at the same time. To do this, in the domain name field, enter the full domain name, for example test.com, or only part of it, for example test. We are ready to offer you both the most common domain zones and specialized domains for your business. Our domain selection system will analyze the selected name in various domain zones, and also offer its own options based on a dictionary of synonyms and their translation. The name can be specified in Latin or Cyrillic characters; they cannot be mixed together.

In order not to take up a lot of your time, all domain check results are grouped into two tabs “Main result” and “Alternative”. Just add the names you like to your cart. Domains cannot be reserved, so once domain names have been selected, we recommend that payment be made as soon as possible.

Are the domain names I select reserved?

The name cannot be reserved. Until the domain is registered, it is available for registration to anyone on the Internet. Therefore, we recommend paying for the name immediately after you have selected domains for yourself.

When checking if a domain is free, you need to remember:

Several people can apply for domain registration at the same time, both in our company and from other registrars. Registration will be carried out on the one whose payment is received first. Therefore, after the domain name has been verified and an invoice has been received, it is better not to delay payment.

Applications for domain registration for which payment has not been received during the validity of the invoice agreement are removed from the queue.

If it is impossible to register a domain name, after receipt of payment, funds are automatically credited to the user’s balance. If desired, funds can be returned to the subscriber in the same way he made the payment.

When checking the availability of a domain, pay attention to the special registration conditions. If such conditions exist, information about this will be to the right of the name of the domain being checked.

You will feel comfortable with us.

FREEhost.UA is not only one of the largest domain name registrars in Ukraine, we also provide hosting services. Therefore, by choosing our company, you receive a full range of services for doing business on the Internet. And our 24/7 support is always ready to help resolve any issues that may arise.

Hello friends! When registering domain names for websites, there are often cases when a new project does not take off - search engines do not allow pages to rank in the TOP results. All this is due to the fact that previously there could have been a shit site on this domain and sanctions were imposed on it. To avoid such surprises, today we will talk about how to check employment and find out its history.

Content:

A website's domain name is the address at which Internet users find your resource by entering it in the address bar of the browser. As I wrote in the article about how, the domain is an integral part of the site. And if we talk about the creation process, then this element comes first.

It is with the registration of a domain name that the history of a new Internet project begins. In the article on how to choose a domain name for a website (), I wrote about the selection methodology, but there I did not say anything about checking the history, although this is important.

Consequences of errors when choosing a domain

The site address has two aspects that will influence its future life. They both have an influence, but the degree of influence varies.

1. Aesthetic component

A significant role in the future popularity of the site is played by euphony, ease of perception and memorization, as well as the associativity of the domain name.

Short domains in which all the characters sound uniquely are easy to remember and write. If the site’s address also makes it easy to guess its focus, then it has a certain advantage due to the human factor. People will prefer it in many situations.

Basically, such domains will have a bonus in offline promotion methods, as well as a small increase due to behavioral factors.

True, as far as search engines are concerned, this bonus is small and there is no particular point in specifically chasing expensive rare names. It's better to invest in developing a good website.

2. Historical component

The domain name of the site is registered for a period of one year, i.e. Every year the rights to use it must be renewed. This means that the currently vacant address could have been previously used by another owner, and it had a certain life and history.

Some people specifically look for domains with history in order to use the authority they have earned ( , bellies). But another situation could easily happen. You were not looking for any authoritative domain, but simply chose a suitable name for the site. We checked its availability, registered it and started working with it, suspecting nothing.

A surprise may await you here. In its past life, the address could not only gain trust, but also, on the contrary, collect fines and sanctions from search engines. Who knows what kind of site was hosted on it, and what black hat SEO methods its owner used. The site was banned or pessimized and it became unprofitable for the owner to continue its development, he refused to renew the domain and it became available.

As a result, you found this free domain, made a good website on it, but it is not indexed, or it is indexed, but does not want to get into the TOP - it turns out to be just hemorrhoids without any benefit. Sometimes the problem resolves itself over time, sometimes correspondence with search engine employees helps, and sometimes it’s still not possible to get the site out.

In any case, unnecessary problems will take a lot of time and it’s not a fact that everything will be fixed. In the third part of the article we will talk about how to check the history of a domain in more detail, but now let's learn how to look for free ones.

How to check if a domain is busy?

Checking the availability of a domain is a very simple procedure. Domains are registered directly through registrar companies or through hosting providers who host websites - they have one database, and we check it against it.

At the beginning of the article I placed a form for verification, here is a repeat of it, you can enter the address directly in it. Or, you can use one of the sites in the list below:

Domain check on SprintHost – sprinthost.ru/whois.html

Domain check on TimeWeb – timeweb.com/ru/services/domain_registration/

On any resource, the check is carried out according to a similar scheme; only the design of the forms may differ.

How to check domain history?

So, we’ve sorted out domain availability, now you know what addresses you can count on for your website.

Unfortunately, search engines do not provide information about whether the site’s address has been used previously and whether any sanctions have been imposed on it. You will have to find out all this yourself through the history of the domain.

All free website addresses are divided into 3 groups:

  1. Never used before - their history is clean, which means there are no sanctions.
  2. Previously used, but released for reasons not related to sanctions, they can also be used, and sometimes get bonuses through links purchased by previous owners.
  3. Previously used and abandoned due to the fact that the domain came under sanctions.

We can determine the 2nd and 3rd groups only with a certain probability, based on indirect signs, but we can determine the 1st group of sites with 100% accuracy - that’s where we’ll start.

Whois domain history

The easiest way to find clean addresses is to look at the domain registration history. There is such a whois characteristic, it indicates all the owner’s data and information about the servers to which the domain is linked. After deleting the site, this data is not lost

If there is no information about past owners, then the name has never been used. There are many paid services that provide this data; there are few free ones, one of them is whoishistory.ru/simplesearch. (Unfortunately, it only works with Russian zones; we will check the bourgeois ones in a different way.)

Enter the desired name and click the “find” button. The service will display all the information it knows, broken down by date.

If the history is clear, then the domain is clean and you can safely register it.

If the domain is not Russian or its history is somehow tainted, then we move on to the next point.

Checking a domain for sanctions

As I already said, it is impossible to unambiguously determine the attitude of search engines towards unregistered domains and we will use indirect signs.

Let's start with the site itself - we need to find out what was there in the past. If it’s an outright GS (shit site), then there’s a 99% chance that it’s under sanctions.

There is a very convenient service that stores copies of all website pages with a time layout. With it you can see what the site looked like before.

How to Check Domain History Using Archive.org

Go to the page archive.org/web/web.php and enter the site address to be checked in the line.

I had a website some time ago, then I abandoned it and didn’t renew the domain, so I checked it using its example, and this is what happened:

In the scan results, the service shows a timeline and on it marks the periods during which site pages were hosted on this domain. Where there was no site, the cells remain empty, and where there was some data, black bars are displayed.

In my example, you can see that the site on the domain first appeared at the end of 2011 and stopped working in 2013.

But that is not all. I have highlighted with a blue dotted line the line where it says that the site version was saved 7 times in the interval from October 11, 2011 to December 29, 2013. If you click on any of these dates, we will open an archived version of the site for that date - this is what the site looked like then:

Mention of a domain name on the Internet

The next step to help us better understand the history of a domain is its footprint on the web. Any site that has existed for some time has left its mark in the form of its own mention on other resources.

All we need is to open the site and indicate the site address in the request. In the results we will see everything that search engine robots know about it.

If the site existed for a long time and the owner was promoting it, then there will be a lot of pages in the search results for this request. You will need to manually parse these pages. From them it will be possible to understand by what methods the site was promoted (whether good links or cheap garbage were placed on it) and in what context it was mentioned.

Conclusion

A free domain does not mean it is clean in the eyes of search engines, and if you do not want problems, then take the time to check the history of your domain name before registering.

In most cases, it is easier to choose another address than to deal with the consequences of past bans and search engine filters.

Want to play spy? Today we will learn how to get comprehensive information about any site. Let's learn about the best way to find out everything about the domain owner. But first you need to understand why this information may be needed.

Why do you need domain information?

It is not appropriate to look into someone else's garden, but situations may arise when this is necessary. Why do you need to know who the domain owner is:

  • If you are going to purchase a domain, you need to make sure that the domain name belongs to the individual or organization that is selling it;
  • Check that you are the owner of the domain - after registering the site name, you need to check that the information you entered about yourself is correct;
  • To avoid becoming a victim of deception, if you are going to establish any business relationships through an unfamiliar resource, then it is better to double-check the domain data;
  • If you're just interested.
Now let's figure out how you can find out whose domain it is. There are several ways to do this:

1. Using whois domain history - there are a number of services on the Internet that allow you to view the history of any domain.

WHOIS refers to application layer network protocols. Its work is based on one of the main Internet protocols, TCP. Information about a domain is entered into the whois history immediately after its registration procedure. This information then goes into public registrars' databases.

Whois history services provide a user interface for the visitor to access such registration data. In addition to all other useful information, information about the domain owner is indicated here.

Let's look at the results of a whois request made on the website nic.ru. In addition to the fact that this service allows you to receive data for free, it has a simple Russian-language interface:

The admin-contact field specifies the email address at which you can contact the resource administrator. The org field contains the name of the organization that owns the requested domain.

Whois history also allows you to find out who the domain is registered to. Special fields can display the owner's contact phone number and email address. And also his last name, first name and patronymic.

Now many resource owners hide their data. This opportunity is available to both individuals and legal entities. Enabling and disabling the Private Person function is done through the profile interface on the domain registrar's website.

When the function is enabled, the inscription “Private Person” is displayed instead of the owner’s first and last name. And the answering machine number will be indicated in the contact phone field.

2. Using web archive data - this method does not provide a 100% guarantee of success. Before you can find out who owns a domain, you'll have to look through a lot of cached pages. And hope that the owner published his data on the site at some point.

The archive is located at archive.org

What else can you learn from a whois history?

As you can see, the main way to find out information about a domain is whois history data. Among other things, you can find out from it the start and end dates of registration. This information is displayed in the created and free-date fields. In addition, the name of the domain registrar is indicated here.

Information about the registrar is reflected in the value of the registrar field. This information may be required when checking a website domain before purchasing it:

But to obtain all the comprehensive data, it is not necessary to know the name of the site. Whois history services allow you to view information about a domain not only by address, but also by IP:

Some more ways to get information

1) You can find out the IP of a site by domain using special services. One of them is 2ip.ru. To do this, you just need to enter the desired domain name in a special search field. Reverse search order is also supported ( searching for a domain name by IP address):

2) How to find out if a domain is free - obtaining this information may be required before going through the domain registration procedure and when selecting a site name.

Most domain name registration services already have similar built-in tools in their functionality.

Many of the whois services also provide the ability to check domain names for occupancy. For example, the site 24whois.ru:

3) How to find out the domain of a site - the domain name is reflected in the very first field of the whois history.

4) Obtaining information about a domain via IP - for this you can use the IPNetInfo program. After launching the application, you need to enter one or more IP addresses to search in a special window:

After this, the program will perform a whois query and return all known information associated with these IPs. Including the domain owner and all contact information:
5) Determining IP by domain name - can be installed using the command line of a computer connected to the network. To do this, use the ping command. Its recording format is shown in the screenshot:
