Reviews: Inkjet printer CANON PIXMA iP7240, color: black. Reviews of the Canon PIXMA iP7240 printer Working with paper and discs
It seems Pixma iP7240 After all, they made a replacement; preliminary information about Model TS704 is available in our review

Afterword from 2016:

Model Pixma iP7240 turned out to be an impressive long-liver. Taking into account the rapid change of generations of printer and MFP models from Canon, this is very unusual. But, nevertheless, the model turned out to be quite tolerable, and at the beginning of 2016 there are still sufficient offers in stores. The price range ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 rubles.

The main drawback of the model, as predicted, lies in the area of gripping paper and microscopic cartridges. These shortcomings apply to all modern “home” models of printers and MFPs from Canon. A set of regular non-starter cartridges costs the same as a new device. Starter cartridges, of course, can be refilled, but their 4-5 ml capacity is depressing. There are also spare parts on the market for these models, but the kit is even more expensive than the printer. Although for many, style and beautiful plastic are really closer to their hearts than the “box-like” design of Epson’s print factories.

Further, we were reproached that the pixma ip7240 review with the photographs provided was a fake. We can only regret that people have not seen truly high-quality photo printing on inkjet printers. This is a completely normal result for modern printing devices. Of course, we can find those photographs in which this model"screwed up" completely. An unsightly large raster will crawl out, the colors will disappear into the dirt, and so on and so forth. But this is an amateur model; usually bright standard photographs are printed on such printers. It is from this point of view that the photographs for the tests were chosen.

Now the main question is: is this model worth buying? Our opinion is that it is worth waiting until the announcement of ruble prices for printing factories from Canon. It is quite possible that this printer with a set of spare parts will cost the same as new solutions from Canon. Well, or, as an option, on the eve of the release of new models, warehouses may be cleared, there is a chance to buy Pixma iP7240 at pre-crisis prices.

ip7240 review from 2012:

PIXMA iP7240 printer review:

Only a lazy person does not “surf” on the wave of success of “Apple” products. So printer manufacturers have not left aside the most popular trend of the year.

The familiar printer models were urgently rebranded, and devices were released that support direct printing from modern smartphones, tablets, etc.

At first, MFPs acquired this function, and after some time inexpensive models printers.

Oddly enough, the last place in this race was taken by Canon with its model PIXMA iP7240. In addition, we had to wait more than two months for the printer announced on the website to appear on sale.

But, while re-reading the printer specification, we came across a number of interesting points that made us want to take this model for testing.

So, although the manufacturer does not hide the fact that this is a replacement model PIXMA 4840/4940, the description reveals a couple of interesting points.

First: the manufacturer writes “low-profile design,” and, judging by the specifications, this is indeed the case (it was 431x297x153 mm, now it is 451x368x128 mm). And if you look even more closely, it will become clear: the printer was simply “flattened”, and the decrease in height caused an increase in other overall dimensions. This means that, most likely, to a greater or lesser extent it could not have happened without changing the kinematic scheme.

Second: support for XL cartridges is announced. What is XL? Are these the old regular volumes with new letters? Or have the cartridges really become larger and heavier? And how did this affect the service life of the mechanics? And won't the seal really become original? consumables more accessible?

All these questions forced us to test the new product from Canon.

First impressions:

So, the printer comes in a box that looks more like packaging for a laptop than a printer.

Let's unpack... The first thing that catches your eye: yes, the printer, of course, has become low-profile, but visually it spreads out too much to the sides. Even the Epson L800 “tractor” looks more compact.

Cartridges... Well, it’s better we show everything close-up. True, of course, there is also an XL version, but it’s also not particularly pleasing with its volume.

In addition, the paper feeding system has been completely redesigned. Now there are two feed cassettes. One is for thick photo paper 10x15 or 13x18, the second is for regular, less dense types.

Alas, there is no ordinary “feeder”. Therefore, for example, it is impossible to print a 20x30 cm photograph or a 20*60 cm banner on this photo printer. Only standard sheets of photo paper in A4 format. For those who are not aware, 20*30 and A4 are different paper sizes.

Although, of course, the device will fit perfectly into the interior of low shelves and will be an excellent complement to stylish “Apple” products. By the way, the CD/DVD printing tray is hidden under the photo paper cassette. You won't find it right away :)

On the back of the printer there is a duplex mechanism. If a paper jam occurs, you will have to “pick out” the device from low shelves and fix the problem.

Next, the print head is already installed in the printer. And, most likely, it is tested at the factory. This is indirectly evidenced by traces of ink on the cap. Of course, tests are good, but the sealed storage packaging, like in previous printers, was much better.

The print head is removable, the fastening mechanism has been changed: to reduce the height, now the lever must not be tilted up, but pulled towards you.

Visual differences seem to be fine.

What's in the bottom line:

  1. The printer became low-profile, but spread out quite a lot to the sides.
  2. To accommodate the fashion for thin products, the printer was deprived of a standard paper feed mechanism, which will be very critical for many.
  3. The game of words and consoles like XL remains a game, there are no fundamental improvements.

So, let's move on to testing print quality.

First of all, text printing: a separate pigment cartridge is provided for this. In addition to it, the printer is equipped with a duplex mechanism, i.e. automatic printing bilateral documents. And using a special black pigment cartridge, printing is carried out both in single-sided and double-sided mode.

The printer prints quite quickly, but if you set it to print on both sides, the sheet will dry for several seconds on the back side before printing each page.

This reduces all the speed indicators of the printer Canon Pixma iP7240 to no, although the function itself is very convenient, however, if you have enough time to print documents.

Now about the sad thing: currently, when using office papers, the quality of text printing on inkjet printers does not reach “laser” clarity and smoothness.

The letters come out slightly loose.

The text, although made in pigment black, has poor mechanical resistance to wet hands. If you run a wet finger over the text, you get a clear “smudge.”

Unfortunately, this is a feature of all thermal inkjet printers. If you need increased abrasion resistance with wet hands when inkjet printing, it is better to pay attention to Epson products.

Overall for home use print quality text documents should be considered satisfactory. And the presence of automatic duplex makes the process also convenient.

Now about the quality of photo printing.

Although any significant changes in the performance characteristics of the printer Canon Pixma iP7240 compared to earlier models, there are no improvements, however, there are improvements, and they are of a consumer nature. This model is equipped with two paper cassettes.

Now you can put photo paper of 10 x 15 cm or 13 x 18 cm in one of them, and A4 in the other and, without constantly running to the printer, send photographs of two types for printing.

We will conduct research on the quality of photo printing on the two most affordable and high-quality photo papers.

First up is Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper.

The paper is quite widely distributed on sale and is found in economical PRO packs. Available in three sizes suitable for this printer: 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm and A4.

The paper is very batch stable and has good color gamut performance.

Secondly, this is Lomond Semi Glossy Bright 1103301, 260 g/m2.

The paper stands out against the background of “classmates” good parameters layer for your price group. And also widespread availability throughout the country.

Unfortunately, paper is presented only with a semi-glossy type of coating, which most closely replicates the “matte” type in mini-labs

This photo paper is available in A4 sheets and 10 x 15 cm format. Also, the 10 x 15 cm format is found in economical PRO packs.

For these types of photo paper, the printer was profiled using original ink cartridges.

Printer driver settings for profiling are shown in the screenshots.

You can download profiles for these two types of paper

Below are comparative graphs of color gamuts of photo papers on the printer Canon Pixma iP7240 using original cartridges.

Graphs are shown for L = 80, L = 50, L = 30, L = 15. Epson photo paper – green chart. Lomond photo paper – white graphic.

Both types of paper performed very well. And can be recommended for use as an alternative to the original Canon Pro Platinum.

Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper produces truer whites and possibly better long-term print durability.

Lomond Semi Glossy Bright photo paper is quite affordable and is in no way inferior to Epson Premium Glossy in terms of color gamut.

In general, prints on both types of photo paper are distinguished by rich colors and good b/w wedge in daylight.

I would also like to dwell on the “trick” of this printer – direct printing from smartphones. With this printing mode, profiles cannot be used, but nevertheless, the photo papers chosen for the test coped with the task perfectly.

Only the black and white wedge caused criticism, although it was quite good for amateur use.

About the gas station

Of course, in the civilized world it is quite difficult to imagine the owner of a top-end tablet from Apple pouring ink into cartridges. But Russia is a country of paradoxes, and here an iPad in the maximum configuration and ink for refilling cartridges can easily coexist on the same table.

In any case, in Russia an inkjet printer is primarily associated with the word “ink”, and not “cartridges”.

For printer Canon Pixma iP7240 DCTec recommends using the standard set for these series.

Below are the results of testing these inks in the printer iP7240: they were poured into starter cartridges using the “classical” method. Before refilling, the cartridge absorber was washed of original ink to ensure the correctness of the measurement results. And the print head was flushed with DCTec washing to eliminate the influence of the original ink on the result.

Starter cartridges are quite “gentle”; when removing or drilling the ball, you should not use excessive force.

Below are comparison graphs of coverage using original and DCTec inks on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper and Lomond Semi Glossy Bright.

Results for Lomond Semi Glossy Bright photo paper. Graphs are shown for L = 80, L = 50, L = 30, L = 15. White graph - DCTec ink. The red graph is the original ink.

An entry-level printing device with a basic set of functions and minimal cost is the Pixma iP7240 from companyCanon. This particular printer model will be discussed in detail and step by step in the review material presented to your attention.

What segment of the printer market is the hero of this review targeting?

Very low cost, very modest specifications and the minimum set of communication interfaces is already initially classified as Canon printer Pixma iP7240 for entry-level, budget-level solutions. But this legendary manufacturer of printing and duplicating equipment, even in this case, managed to create a masterpiece and realize many useful functions in this budget class printer. Some of them allow the hero of this review to outperform most of their direct competitors in terms of technical specifications without any problems.

Equipment

Simply excellent equipment in the Pixma iP7240, which allows the new owner of such a device to start using it immediately after purchase. It includes the following:

    A printer.

    USB interface cable.

The power cord with which this economy-class printer is connected to an alternating voltage network, due to this, the power supply of such a printing system is organized.

Detailed installation, connection and operation instructions.

    Set of inkwells.

A special tray that allows you to print on CDs.

A disk with the necessary software and an electronic version of the documentation for this printing device.

Technology

Inkjet is the basis of the hero of this review. Liquid ink is used. In this case, their number is 4. For the most popular black and white mode, only black ink based on pigment technology is used. In the case of printing in color, the process of obtaining a print additionally includes ink of three more colors: blue, yellow and magenta. Combining the four previously mentioned colors allows you to obtain color images, pictures and photographs.

Name of cartridges

Cartridge models PGI-450PG, PGI-450PGXL, CLI-451, CLI-451XL designed for installation in the “black” slot of the Pixma iP7240. The “blue” slot of this printing device can accommodate the CLI-451C or CLI-451CXL, the “yellow” slot - the CLI-451Y or CLI-451YXL, and the “magenta” slot - the CLI-451M or CLI-451MXL. The original configuration of the printer includes cartridges without the XL prefix with a reduced print resource and reduced capacity. In the future, it is recommended to equip such a printer with more capacious cartridges and a longer print resource. As you might guess, their markings include the prefix XL.

Interface kit

The Pixma iP7240 printer boasts an ideal set of interfaces. First of all, it includes a standard USB wired connection to a PC. Its main drawback is the need to be very close to system unit. In this case, the distance cannot exceed 2 m. Another limitation with this connection method is that such a computer must be turned on to print. Essentially, in this case, such a PC performs the functions of a print server.

But there is also the possibility of implementing the functions of the latter using only one printer. To do this, just use wireless interface Wi-Fi. Also, another important advantage of this connection method is that there is no need to place the printing device in relative proximity to the computer. Therefore, in practice, it is recommended to use the latter connection method using a wireless network.

Permission

The undeniable advantages of the Canon Pixma iP7240 include the resolution of printed documents. In color mode, its maximum value is set at 9600 x 2400. According to this indicator, the hero of this review can confidently be classified as a photo printer. Another factor that also puts it in this class is the minimum droplet size. Its size in this case is 1 pl.

Separately, it should be noted that printing monochrome documents and images in such high resolution not justified. Moreover, both from a technical and economic point of view. On the one hand, such a resolution contributes to more intensive wear of the printing system, and on the other hand, there is an increased consumption of ink. Therefore, in black and white mode, it is recommended to reduce the resolution of printed documents to 1200 x 1200. Their quality will not deteriorate significantly, but this will certainly extend the life of the printer and reduce ink consumption.

Page sizes

The Canon Pixma iP7240 printer is aimed at printing primarily on A4 sheets of paper. It can also print on A5, legal, B5 and letter. In addition, you can print on Commercial 10 or DL format envelopes. In all these cases, the paper weight should be between 60 and 105 gsm and the bottom tray should be used to load the paper. If you plan to print photographs, the dimensions of which in this case begin with 10 x 15 and end with 20 x 25, then you need to use paper with a density of about 300 g/m2 and the upper tray for loading.

Fingerprint speed

The Canon Pixma iP7240 is capable of outputting up to 15 monochrome prints and up to 10 color prints in one minute. For a budget-class printing device, these are excellent speed indicators. It has more modest speed characteristics when outputting photographs. For example, it will print one print with dimensions of 10 x 15 in 65-70 seconds.

Jet printer The Canon Pixma iP7240 is a fast, low-profile photo printer with Wi-Fi, automatic two-sided printing and direct-to-disc printing. High-performance photo printer with 5 individual cartridges, Wi-Fi functionality and the ability to print from a smartphone. Low-profile design, two built-in paper trays, automatic two-sided printing and direct-to-disc printing. Powerful performance, stylish design With Wi-Fi connectivity and 5 separate ink tanks, this high-performance photo printer is great for fast, high-quality photo, document and CD printing. It can be easily accessed from anywhere in the home, including access from mobile devices. The new stylish, low-profile design with an auto-opening tray is ideal for use in tight spaces. Smartphone and tablet support Wi-Fi connectivity and the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint app make it easy to print using smartphones and tablets from virtually anywhere in the home. There is also the possibility of direct printing of photos, messages Email, web pages and other documents with Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, by using Apple features AirPrint. Improved media utilization options Fully integrated dual paper cassettes allow simultaneous loading different sizes and types of paper. Direct to Disc Print allows you to design and print labels directly onto compatible Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and CDs, and create matching covers for easy organization and sharing with family members and friends. Get more creative with your photos Print photos easier and faster with My Image Garden software and unleash the full potential of your PIXMA printer. With the Print Your Days app, you can organize and print photos directly from Facebook. Fast print speeds For stunning detail and fast printing of documents and images at home, this photo printer features a best-in-class 1 picoliter print head with 9600 dpi resolution. The printer provides fast speed Document printing A4 ISO ESAT 15 ipm in black and white and 10 ipm in color and produces 10 x 15 cm borderless photos with exceptional lab quality in approximately 21 seconds. Save paper and energy Auto Duplex saves paper while creating a more professional-looking document. The device does not require startup by a service engineer. You can connect and run it yourself using the user manual.

The Canon PIXMA iP7240 printer seems to be created to be discreetly stored somewhere on a shelf, waiting for its finest hour. Its appearance carefully hides its belonging to printing devices, and indeed to any devices, for that matter.

Without instructions, it is impossible to understand that this is a printer; rather, the Canon PIXMA iP7240 can be mistaken for a media player. We know that a printer must have a paper input tray and a paper output tray. An opening lid for installing cartridges, after all. You won’t find any of this on the Canon PIXMA iP7240 until you start feeling it with your hands.

Although, due to the abundance of glossy inserts in the surface, it is not recommended to touch it with your hands - fingerprints on the case remain very noticeable. And in general, dust sticks to these inserts very actively, which does not quite suit its image of an “inconspicuous box on a shelf.”

The Canon PIXMA iP7240 has carefully removed all the most important things inside itself and is in no hurry to reveal its secrets without instructions. Even the buttons are reliably disguised as design elements. There are only four buttons, three on the left and one on the right. The one on the right is mechanical, and its only function is to push out the tray to eject images. Moreover, if you decide to start printing without pressing this button, the tray will recline on its own. The three buttons on the left already have deeper functionality. Under the power on and off button is a universal button for communicating with the printer (you press it if paper is stuck, if it’s time to change the cartridge, if the paper is out, and many other “ifs”). And even lower there was a round button for connecting the printer to the Wi-Fi network.

There are two paper trays hidden at the very bottom of the printer. The one slightly higher is designed for photo paper in small but popular formats - 5x7 inches (13x18 centimeters) or 4x6 inches (10x15 centimeters). You can insert a disk into it, but from the bottom side, for direct printing on its surface. The lower “cassette” is more versatile; you can insert all popular formats into it, up to A4, and it can hold up to 125 sheets. Thanks to this solution, you won’t have to constantly change paper if you alternate between printing abstracts on plain paper and printing photographs on small-format photo paper.

The printer has no other active elements - no screen, no card reader, no USB port for connecting the camera directly. Perhaps, for a home printer, which is the Canon PIXMA iP7240, these additions are not really needed.

In general, no matter how you look at it, the printer seems to be designed to stand peacefully in a corner, not take up extra space and not attract unnecessary attention. The flat, rectangular design makes it easy to fit into any space, and the lid will soon start to accumulate papers or decorative items like stuffed animals, whether you like it or not. Wireless technologies, which the printer is stuffed with, will allow you to get by with one single power cord, and two trays will allow you not to get up too often to change plain paper for a photo.

Advantages
Excellent printing on Discs, very good quality printing on photo paper! That's why he took the laser from me for the text.
WiFi is really very convenient, I can print from different computers wirelessly.
Really low, very convenient to squeeze between shelves
Flaws
For me, well, there may be a small hassle when installing the CISS. It takes a long time to prepare for printing, but it’s not critical!

I'm very happy with the purchase! The original cartridges were immediately used up (I printed 20 discs), the first one ran out of pink, but by this time the CISS had been delivered, so I threw out the original mulipusic containers. I installed a supply system (here the manufacturer tried so that the client would not use chemicals), but everything turned out well, and with the lid closed, the tubes simply come in from the side.
The OSP ink was excellent! BUT let me mention that in black tones there is a slight shift to gray. I ordered profiling ink + paper. After installing the profile, the print quality is simply excellent!!!
I printed a huge number of photographs and I am very pleased with the discs.
Moreover, I can print a lot and then it can just sit there for a couple of weeks, after which it prints without streaks or jambs.
Conclusion: the quality is excellent! If you want good print quality, then only through Photoshop, otherwise the printer takes over the color profile and the colors go away. PZK cartridges or install CISS (my choice is filled up and I don’t worry. The cheapest way to order it is on Ali Express) the ink cost me 2500 rubles, 5 colors and there is no end or end... and new cartridges would cost 4 rubles, approximately... here it is benefit!
At this point I have printed about 400 discs. and more than 1000 photos
I liked it, I took Two! I recommend.

20 4

    - Excellent printing for 3 kopecks (the printer itself + refilling).
    - At correct setting The print profile produces gorgeous photos (the grain is almost invisible). See below for how to set it up.
    - Low body
    - Excellent Wi-Fi (put it wherever you want and print from absolutely any device, no wires)
Flaws
    - Small volume of cartridges (frequently taking out starter cartridges for refilling using the “syringe” method will bore anyone).
    - There are no refillable cartridges on sale yet (although they promise) Otherwise, with opaque cartridges it’s somehow scary to wait until the print head burns out :(
    - There is no CISS either, and you can’t install it without drilling out the body.
    - Method Wi-Fi settings by default from the instructions wretched pornography. To find a utility for setting up a connection “manually” you need to spend half a day (Unadvanced people won’t figure it out!).
    - The default print profile settings suck, it’s like a drunk typed the photos with his ass. (Unadvanced people will not understand!)
A comment

1) Setting up a print profile:
In the printer properties tab Main tab Media type Photo Paper Pro Platinum, then below Print quality “Other” set pull to the right to “1”. Ok Ok Ok. The rest can be left untouched.
2) Wi-Fi, for those who do not have WPS in the router, is configured using the Canon IJ Network Tool utility. There is no description in the paper instructions that come with the kit, see the electronic manual.

Good quality printing even on inktek ink
    Fast and moderately quiet printing
Flaws
    1. PAPER FEED! Just a “masterpiece” no top tray.... Why?.....
    2. Reliability of the feed rollers a separate story stops taking paper normally from the tray VERY quickly on the 4th “set” of cartridges there are constant “slips”!!! On any paper, including Canon paper I tried the experiment for...
    3. The capacity of the cartridges and their inadequate cost.
    4. The impossibility in principle of installing CISS due to the design, which Russian CISS installers clearly worked out for their money. They succeeded!
A comment

I have always respected Canon products! Before this, we faithfully worked hard to wear out the ip2600, 3600, 4600. Only favorable memories remain from them! Sorry, Canon engineers, but maybe you should start making a printer out of toilet paper? Why did the product quality suddenly become so low? This printer did not work normally for even two months! Another ip2700 “sailed away” after four months of work, having used up the CISS refill and only then gave up the ghost! At this rate, it will be necessary to honestly put the “disposable” label on printers!

Eh, Canon-Canon.... It's a pity that you are like Yepson, which I abandoned after replacing the design principle of their great R-300 and R-200 with the current disposable "pop" P-50 and L-800....
