How to configure a router without a software disk? Often people who become happy owners of such a useful device as Wi-Fi router, have a desire to configure it themselves. This happens when installation disk for some reason is missing or the computer is not equipped with a disk drive. As practice shows, you can configure a router without a disk. Sometimes it's easier than it might seem at first glance.

    Is it needed at all?

So, you have in your hands the disk that was in the factory box of your router. Contrary to popular belief, it does not contain drivers (they are not needed for the router), but an installation program, which is a step-by-step description of your setup steps. The number of settings is kept to a minimum. When recording their programs, not every manufacturer made sure that their programs were truly user-friendly. Unfortunately, not all installations can be carried out using only the CD supplied with the device.

As for specific router manufacturers, we can note the Linksys E1200 setup guide, which contains a truly high-quality program - Linksys Connect, which is really quite enough to set the necessary parameters. The program supplied with Tp-Link is also simple.

However, a number of manufacturers do not bother to supply their router with a CD with installation programs, believing that the user will configure their device using a browser. Such manufacturers include Tenda N3, but it was installed without problems. Yes, and Asus RT-N12 can also be installed without a CD .

What if the disc is not included?

What comes with the router and is recorded on a CD is always available on the manufacturer’s official website. To download this, do the following:

    Log in to the website of the company whose router you purchased;

    Select the model that you have;

    Download the setup program;

Run it on your PC according to the instructions.

As mentioned earlier, any router can be configured without using any programs. If there is a need to configure the router from a tablet, smartphone, or if your PC does not have a CD drive or is faulty, this can be done through a browser.

    Where can I get this?

To do this, you need to go to the settings page of your router. All the necessary actions required for this are described in detail in the note. There are the necessary links for setting up devices from manufacturers such as: Tp-Link, D-link, Asus, etc. You can use this useful link -

There are a lot of users who want to configure the router themselves, and do not find the installation disk included with the device, and don’t know what to do next. How to ask required settings for the provider, set up Wi-Fi, etc. I’ll say right away, You can configure the router without a disk. It seems to me that this is even simpler. Let's figure it out now.

On the disk, which can usually be found in the box with the router, there is a program (and not drivers, as many people think:) no drivers are needed for the router), which allows you to configure the router step by step. There are minimal settings. Everything is done to simplify the setup process and convenience. But not all manufacturers have these programs that are really simple and understandable. And not all settings can be performed through the utility from the disk. I wrote instructions for, they have a really good utility there - Linksys Connect, which allows you to set the necessary parameters. Tp-Link does the same simple program For quick setup router.

But many manufacturers do not put disks with the router in the box at all. special programs. This is all because any router can (and I think it is necessary) configure via browser. There was definitely no disk with the Tenda N3. But we set it up without any problems. Yes, we also set it up without a disk.

What to do if there is no installation disk from the router?

Firstly, the program located on the disk can be downloaded without any problems from the website of your router manufacturer. If you have, for example, Tp-Link, then go to the company’s official website, select the model of your device, and approximately on the “downloads” or “support” tab, download the utility for setting up the router. Launch it on your computer and follow the instructions. In the near future I will try to prepare articles on setting up routers different manufacturers precisely with the help of utilities.

Secondly, as I wrote above, any router can be configured without any programs. But if you don’t have it in your laptop CD-DVD drive drives, it's not working, or you want to configure your router from your tablet. In such cases, the setup must be done through the browser of a computer, tablet, or even phone.

Just go to the control panel and set the necessary settings. This way there is less chance of getting confused in the settings. When configuring using the utility, most likely, you will still have to configure it through the web interface (browser).

It's time to tell how configure the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router so that the Internet works and Wi-Fi comes with a password. For those who like to figure it out for themselves, we’ll tell you about additional settings TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router and firmware for it.
Setting up routers for models TL-WR-841N or TL-WR-841ND and hardware revisions V8, V9, V10 and V11 is fundamentally no different. In each revision, only new features have been added and additional sections have appeared, but the basic settings are the same.

Preparatory operation before setting up the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router

Connect to the router using the cable that was included in the box. Plug one end of the cable into your computer or laptop and the other into one of the yellow connectors on the router. If you don’t have a short cable or don’t have a computer or laptop at hand, you can configure the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router via Wi-Fi. To do this, connect to Wi-Fi, which is initially called in your router.

How to find out the name of the Wi-Fi network on the router

Do not plug the router into the outlet yet. Look at all the networks that your tablet or smartphone sees, especially those with the maximum signal level and no lock sign (no password). Now power on the router and wait a minute. Then again look at what networks are visible, especially with the maximum signal level and without a lock. You should definitely have another network, and this is exactly the one that belongs to your router.
Now that you are connected to the router via cable or Wi-Fi, enter the address in your browser 192.168.0.1 without http and press the command to open the site. A window should appear asking you to enter your login and password. Usually The login and password for the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router are the same: admin admin.

What to do if the router is not new, it was from another provider or you forgot the passwords for it

If the router was purchased a long time ago and was either on the network of another provider, or you simply forgot the Wi-Fi password, you can reset all settings before setting up the router. Resetting the settings is done while the router is turned on. Take a sharp thin object, such as a toothpick or a pin, and lightly press it into the small hole in the router case from the side of the connectors and hold for 10 seconds and then release. After this, you will notice on the router that the indicators blink for a short time in a different way than usual - this is a sign that the settings on the router have been reset.

After you enter the router settings you will see home page. On the left in the column are menu items for going to specific settings, and on the right in most of the window on a white background are options for settings or the current state of the router.

Setting up the Internet on the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router

Select Network - WAN from the menu on the left
In the main window, select the desired connection type. Ivstar subscribers choose Dynamic IP address. This means that subscribers receive all settings automatically. Usually this type connection occurs initially with a new router or when the router settings were reset. Essentially, this means that a subscriber who has connected his computer to the router with a cable will already be able to access the Internet on the Ivstar network. A trifle, but nice.
If your provider uses a login and password to connect, select the PPTP connection type and get ready for the fact that your router most likely will not be able to handle speeds greater than 30 megabits, c'est la vie.
So, let's move on. When your router has received settings from your provider, immediately under the selected connection type, you will see that the IP address, subnet mask and gateway are different from zero and contain some numbers. Ivstar subscribers will have an IP address starting with 10.200 or 91.247.
We do not touch the MTU size (the number of MTUs should be either 1492 or 1500).
Check mark next to the item Use these DNS servers and Obtain an IP address using Unicast DHCP We don’t put it.
After all changes on each page, do not forget to click on the button Save or Apply at the very bottom of the page.

If your network provider uses equipment binding, you can change MAC address router to the MAC address of the device through which the Internet previously worked. Go to the Network menu - Clone MAC addresses. If it was just the computer from which you are setting up the router, then click the Clone MAC address button. If you previously had a different router or a different computer than the one you now have, then manually enter the desired MAC address. You can ask your ISP for the required MAC.
Click the button Save, if something has changed on the page.

Setting up a wireless network on the TP-LINK TL-WR-841 router

Be sure to change the name of your Wi-Fi network and set a password! Make it mono in the menu Wireless mode— Wireless mode settings.

Change the network name to your own. The network name should not contain Russian letters, only numbers, dashes, underscores and Latin letters.
    Leave the region to Russia.
For starters, leave the mode as it is 11bgn mixed.
    Channel width - Auto.
We recommend changing the channel from Auto to numbers from 1 to 13.
Maximum transfer speed - leave it at maximum.

If one of the devices sees your Wi-Fi network, but cannot connect to it, although the password is correct, change the Mode parameter to another one.

Very important If in the future you notice that when you connect to the router via cable, everything is fine with the Internet, but problems begin over Wi-Fi, especially in the evenings and on weekends, you need to change the channel number and select it experimentally. Interference from neighbors' routers has started! To do this, you may have to go into the router settings and change the channel more than once.

How to understand that Wi-Fi interference has started and immediately select the optimal channel number on the router

Install on your smartphone wifi app Analyzer (available for Android). This program will clearly show you how much wireless networks works on the same channel as your router, which means you can figure out which channel number to choose without guessing. Remember that interference from Wi-Fi extends not only to the channel on which your network operates, but also to neighboring ones!

Now let's set a password for Wi-Fi. Go to the menu Wireless mode - Wireless protection.
    Check the WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK box
    Version: WPA2-PSK
    Encryption: AES
PSK Password: Set your network password to whatever you want. Write it down somewhere!

To be able to watch IPTV through the router, go to the Network - IPTV menu and set the IGMP Proxy parameter to Enable and leave the Mode as Automatic.

This completes the basic setup of the router - the Internet should work both via wires and via Wi-Fi.

Settings for advanced users: strengthen security, combat Wi-Fi interference, limit capabilities, etc.

If for some reason it is important for you to change IP addresses on the internal network (for example, you will connect a couple of routers in series), go to the Network menu - The local network. Change the starting address of your router to a new one. Don’t forget to remember it, because after saving the settings you will need to log into the router again at the new address in the browser.

Need to change the IP address range for your network? Please! In the DHCP menu - DHCP Settings you can specify the starting and ending IP address that your router will assign to your computers in home network. When might you need to reduce the address range on your router? For example, if your router distributes the Internet to a network where many client devices can connect to it simultaneously (say, in a cafe there is free Wi-Fi for clients), and you do not want each extra computer, tablet or smartphone wasted part of the Internet speed. Let them wait until someone disconnects and then take a free address.

You can find out which device has which IP address assigned by the router in the DHCP menu - DHCP Client List.

If you want the router to constantly issue a specific IP address to a specific computer, you can configure this in the DHCP - Address Reservation menu. When might this come in handy? For example, if a service is turned on on one of the computers that needs to be accessed from the Internet. So that when accessing the external address of your router by specific port there was access to a specific service within your network, for this purpose a reservation of addresses is made, and, in addition, port forwarding is configured in another section.

If you need to access a specific service on your home network from the outside world via the Internet, configure port forwarding (port forwarding). Port forwarding is configured in the Forwarding - Virtual Servers menu.

An example when you need to configure port forwarding.

Suppose you have a web server running on some computer, which is accessible on the port you specified, and you want to access the router address from external network via the Internet you were able to access exactly this web server. As an example in the pictures below, we use a web server on a computer inside the network with the address 192.168.0.2 on port 8080, and from the outside world we want to get to this server by dialing the router address and another port, for example the standard 80 for the web.

If it is important for you to have traffic tunneling services running from your home network, go to the Security menu - Configure basic protection and enable all the necessary options. Enabling PPTP traffic options may be required if you connect via VPN connection to your work computer or remote server.

Attack protection settings are made in the Security - Advanced protection settings menu.

If there is a need to access the router settings from the outside world via the Internet, you can set the service port number for this case in the Security - Remote Management menu.

Do you need to force limit the speed on your router? This can be done in the Control menu bandwidth— Control parameters.

In the Bandwidth Control - List of Rules menu, see all the speed limit rules that you have specified for each situation.

Do you want to assign a permanent IP address to a specific MAC address? You can set this in the menu Binding IP and MAC addresses - Binding parameters.

You can check the network operation in the menu System utilities- Diagnostics.

You can view the response from a specific server using the Ping command, setting the packet size and timeout.

Found new firmware for a router? You can flash the router yourself, the main thing is that the firmware is suitable specifically for your Roturea model, taking into account the version (revision) of the hardware. Updating the router firmware is done in the System Tools - Firmware Update menu. When updating the firmware, do not turn off the power to the router and do not update the firmware while connected via Wi-Fi!

You can password-protect the entrance to the router to prevent children or other prying hands from getting into it. Go to the System Tools - Password menu and set your username and password. The main thing is not to forget them yourself, otherwise you will have to reset the router settings and configure the router all over again.

You can see what happened to the router and when in the logs in the System Tools - System Log menu.

For advanced users, in case of large interference and unstable Wi-Fi operation, play with the settings in the Wireless mode - Advanced settings menu.
