Installing Windows 7 on MacBook. How to install Windows on Mac? Step-by-step instruction

Long-time experts in the field computer technology note the priority of Apple in the field of personal computer development.

From the mid-70s of the last century to the present day, Apple has been confidently competing with IBM in the field of computer technology. In the old fashioned way, their computers are called “Macs,” despite the fact that real Macintoshes are already of museum value.

Their technical solutions famous manufacturers shamelessly copy them. Macs are reliable and functional. In the same time operating system Windows is more familiar, so a number of users need to install Windows 7 on MAC OS.

Popularity of Apple computers

The main differences between Apple's developments:

  • “closedness” of architecture;
  • high reliability and ease of use;
  • ease of working with graphics and printing;
  • leader of new products in the computer industry.

The MacBook belongs to the family of popular laptops developed by Apple. The latest version of the MacBook laptop is distinguished by functionality, compactness and quiet operation. The dimensions are amazing: thickness about 13 mm, weight up to 1 kg. The developers were able to abandon the use of fans in the design and create a new motherboard with a high density of elements.

The keyboard has a highly stable press locking mechanism, and the keys have individual backlighting. Retina display 13" diagonal is exceptionally thin, reproduces images with high resolution. The touchpad panel is very sensitive to touch, capable of varying the degree of pressure when touched. The battery capacity has been increased by optimizing the housing design.

Aluminum parts create a strong and reliable mechanism for fastening the rotating part of the housing. The use of a new USB-C connector for charging, video and sound playback, and data transfer also makes it possible to ensure the declared geometric parameters of the product.

Two installation methods

There are two installation methods: using Apple's own Boot Camp software and using the Virtualbox virtual machine.

Boot Camp offers the user the following sequence of operations to install the Windows operating environment:

The virtualbox machine emulates the work:

  • BIOS;
  • random access memory;
  • hard drive;
  • peripheral devices.

For computers designed for Windows platform, used to install a system other than MAC OSX. The program is distributed free of charge.

Installing Windows 7 on MAC OS X via Boot Camp

Installation requirements:

  • the hardware platform must have a connection to the Internet;
  • an OS X administrator account is used to access the “Boot Camp Assistant” program;
  • have a working keyboard, mouse, trackpad;
  • 2 GB or more of RAM and 30 GB or more must be available disk space for the initial installation of Windows, to update earlier versions of Windows you will need from 40 GB;
  • necessary installation disk For Microsoft Windows when installing via a built-in or external DVD drive;
  • You may need a USB flash drive with a capacity of at least 8 GB to install drivers.

What is necessary?

Installation requires:

System update

Installing Windows 7 usually requires version 4 of Boot Camp Assistant (BCA) on a 32-bit platform and version 5 for a 64-bit platform. Update Boot Camp software to install latest drivers Windows to Mac computer.

This can be done in two ways:

Entry into the BCA program may require knowledge account with administrator rights.

Installation steps

The installation is lengthy and will require connecting a source adapter. We proceed from the fact that full installation updates have been made. Seven requires use file system NTFS format.

First remove all disks with lower numbers if the installation is not on the first disk.

Once the OS installation is complete, the data disks can be recovered. If you have installation problems, use disk utilities recovering and erasing data with restarting the BCA.

Installation procedure:

Install OS using VirtualBox

To install, you need to download the program file and run it on your computer.

Installing the program

Installing VirtualBox is carried out by performing the sequence of operations 1-15:

  1. run the installation file;
  2. agree to the requirements of the license agreement, click “Next”;

  3. go through the windows sequentially by clicking the “Next” button, call the “Install” command and agree to additional installation prompts software;
  4. wait for the installation to complete and complete the process by clicking on the “Finish” button;

  13. click on “Finish” and we get the VM ready for use;

  14. configure the VM, to do this, go to the “Properties” tab;
  15. in the “Display” settings section, set the amount of video memory available for the VM from 26 MB. Check the boxes for 2D and 3D acceleration;

  16. from the “Media” list, select the icon DVD disc A.

Windows OS Installation Steps

Installation can take place via an installation disk or its ISO image. If the installation takes place using an installation disk, then it should be inserted into the DVD drive, in the “Attributes” column, select the “Drive” item from the drop-down list, and also check the “Allow direct access” checkbox.

Next, you should exit to the main program window, where you click the “Start” button. When information windows appear, click the “OK” button. On the virtual machine screen, click the mouse and press the “Capture” button. Further installation of the OS on the VM does not differ from normal installation.

Once the installation is complete, VirtualBox will immediately launch the operating system. The VM blocks mouse and keyboard use when used in a host environment. Switching between VM windows and the main OS window is done using the Right Control host key. If you exclude the capture of the mouse cursor and keyboard of the VM, then you can use the mouse cursor in the virtual and main operating systems, and also have a common clipboard. To do this, use the "Devices" menu VirtualBox machines go to the “Install Guest OS Additions” item.

In the “AutoPlay” pop-up window, click “VBoxWindows Additions.exe” and follow the program settings.

You can exit the VM by performing the following sequence of operations:

  • in the virtual machine menu, select “Machine”;
  • then go to “Close”;
  • go to the item turn off.

Start already installed Windows 7 is carried out by the “Start” button of the main program window. Install operating room Windows system 7 on mac os in two ways: using Boot Camp, which is an Apple development, and using the VirtualBox virtual machine. A more transparent installation is carried out using Boot Camp.

Many people who are used to working with Windows find it quite difficult to switch to a new operating system after purchasing a computer from Apple. In addition to non-standard controls and many functional differences, they are also not satisfied with the fact that the number of programs, games and various utilities developed for macOS is significantly smaller. For this reason, some users install Windows on Mac.

Is it possible to install Windows on Apple computers?

As a rule, the question about the possibility of installing Windows on a Mac computer appears in the first few days after purchasing it. Few people are interested in this issue before purchasing. But the habits left over from the times using Windows, and a noticeable shortage of software force us to think about the possibility of using a more familiar and familiar operating system.

Fortunately, such an opportunity exists. Owners of Apple computers can install almost any Windows OS, and without the help of qualified specialists.

The Windows operating system does not replace the installed macOS; it is an additional independent program.

How to install Microsoft OS on Mac

To install Windows on Mac devices, the Boot Camp utility is most often used; virtualization programs are used less frequently. But first you need to choose the appropriate OS version and upgrade macOS, if necessary. Many users do not attach much importance to the issue of choice, which creates additional difficulties for themselves both at the stage of installing an additional OS and after it.

For example, Windows 10 cannot be installed on Mac computers, released before 2012. This is due to higher system requirements and other features of the program. If you don't follow this rule, you will simply waste time. Here is a list of Mac computers that support Windows 10:

  • all the lineup MacBook Pro, which appeared after mid-2012, including 13 and 15-inch versions;
  • two 12-inch MacBook models sold in early 2015 and 2016;
  • all models MacBook Air with diagonals of 11 and 13 inches, hitting the market after mid-2012;
  • Mac Pro, released in late 2013;
  • Mac mini 2012 and 2014, including the Mac mini Server model introduced in late 2012;
  • all iMac models since the late 2012 version.

As for earlier versions of Windows, they can also be installed on Mac computers released before 2012, but there are also some restrictions. Here is a small list of operating systems supported Apple devices, indicating the appropriate version of the Boot Camp program:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate (Boot Camp 4 or 1);
  • Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate Service Pack 1 or later (Boot Camp 3);
  • Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or 3 (Boot Camp 3).

Before purchasing an operating system, make sure it is suitable for your computer.

Many users from Russia and post-Soviet countries prefer to download unlicensed operating systems instead of buying original boot disks. This is a gross violation of copyright law.

What you need to install Windows on Mac

In terms of installation requirements, all Windows OS releases can be divided into three categories:

  1. Windows 7 and earlier.
  2. Windows 8.
  3. Windows 10

Requirements for the first category:

The external drive must support the method of storing and transferring data in FAT (MS-DOS) format.

Requirements for the second category (Windows 8):

If all the requirements are met, the Boot Camp utility will automatically install additional software to adapt Windows 8 to the technical features of your Mac.

To find out the version of your operating system, you need to go to the menu (the button with the Apple logo in the lower left corner of the keyboard) and select “About This Mac”.

The requirements for the third category are similar, except for one condition: the version of the OS used must be Mac OS X Yosemite or higher.

Installation using Boot Camp

Due to differences between different Windows operating systems, we will describe installation instructions for each category separately.

Windows 7 or earlier

To install Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 on an Apple computer, you must:

  1. Connect an external storage device and do not remove it until the installation is complete.
  2. Create a virtual image of the boot disk. To do this, you can use programs such as Daemon Tools or Nero Burning Rom. The image will be required to work with the Boot Camp program.

    You can create a Windows boot disk image using Nero Express

  3. Launch the Boot Camp program. It can be found in the "Utilities" folder. If you can't find the desired folder, use the search.
  4. The installer will appear, where you need to check the box next to “Create an installation Windows disk 7". After this, click the “Continue” button.

    In the window that appears, check the box next to “Create a Windows 7 installation disk”

  5. We insert the disk with the new OS or mount the image into the virtual drive and click “Continue” again.
  6. After a few seconds, a message will appear indicating that you can download the appropriate software from the official Apple website. We confirm the action. The Boot Camp utility will automatically download the necessary software. If this does not happen, you need to download the archive with drivers yourself by selecting your Mac computer model and Windows version on the official website.

    Confirming that you have downloaded the latest Windows support software from the Apple website

  7. After downloading additional software, you need to unpack it to external storage(USB flash drive). The system will offer to copy files with replacement, confirm this action.
  8. Once again, go to Boot Camp and select “Install Windows”.
  9. The program will offer to divide the memory allocated for the additional OS into disks, after which it will reboot and begin installation.

    Set the required virtual disk size for Windows OS

Further actions must be performed based on the prompts of the installer program.

Windows 8

Installing Windows 8 is easier and faster than earlier versions of operating systems:

Boot Camp will install the necessary software and drivers on its own. No external USB storage required. This also applies to the latest release from Microsoft - Windows 10. You just need to install boot disk or flash drive, launch Boot Camp Assistant, divide the disk space and follow the instructions.

Video: How to install Windows 8 on Mac as a second OS via BootCamp

Features of installing Windows OS using a flash drive

In fact, the process of installing an additional OS using a flash drive is the same as in the case of a DVD, the only difference is that you need to prepare a USB drive in advance so that it becomes bootable. If you just write the image to a USB drive, nothing will work, you need additional program called UltraISO or similar ones.

In order to install Windows from a flash drive, you need to make it bootable

This program is shareware - available test period, which is quite enough to install Windows from a flash drive. Let's bring brief instructions on preparing a USB drive for installing an OS from Microsoft:

You can buy an operating system already stored on a USB drive. In this case, no additional actions need to be taken.

Using the instructions described above, you can install Windows OS as an additional and, importantly, independent program. Before each start of your computer, you will have a choice which of the installed operating systems to use.

Virtualize Windows OS on Mac

In addition to installing via Boot Camp, there is another method to use Windows on Apple computers - virtualization. It differs in that the Microsoft operating system is installed and used as an application running directly on macOS. In this case, it looks more like a regular program that opens in a small window than a full-fledged operating system.

When installed in virtualization mode, Windows operates more like a regular application

At the moment the most popular programs for virtualization are:

  • Oracle VM VirtualBox, distributed free of charge;
  • Parallels Desktop, which costs 3,990 rubles;
  • VMware Fusion with a price tag of 5,153 rubles.

The difference in cost is dictated solely by the pricing policy of the development companies, since all programs work equally well. The only difference free program for virtualization from paid analogues - it cannot be used together with Boot Camp.

Installing virtualization programs is almost identical, so as an example, let's consider installing only one of them - Parallels Desktop:

When you start the program, a Windows window will open in front of you, which can be maximized full screen mode(full-screen).

Combined use of Boot Camp and virtualization

Some users have gone even further by developing a mechanism combined use Boot Camp and virtualization capabilities. Thus, they solved the problem of excessive consumption of computer resources with two operating systems running simultaneously.

To achieve the correct operation of the above circuit, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. Install Windows on your computer using Boot Camp.
  2. Install one of the virtualization programs (except Oracle VM VirtualBox).
  3. When creating a new virtual machine, check the box next to “Use Windows via Boot Camp.”

Pros and cons of using Boot Camp and virtualization

Boot Camp was created by Apple developers to give users the ability to change operating systems at will. Moreover, databases have been created in the form of drivers and additional software designed to simplify the process of adapting Windows to computer technology from Apple. It is for this reason that Boot Camp is so popular among MacBook owners of various modifications.

Benefits of using Boot Camp:

As for the disadvantages, there is only one: not all versions of Windows are supported by Mac computers.

If we talk about the benefits of Windows virtualization on Mac, we can highlight the following points:

  • the ability to use Windows without leaving macOS;
  • quick work with documents and programs.

Disadvantages of virtualization:

  • two operating systems running simultaneously consume much more system resources;
  • Some Windows programs may not work correctly. The situation is similar with the screen resolution settings.

With utilities like Boot Camp and virtualization programs, users can work on familiar Windows operating systems while using high-performance, high-quality Mac computers. This is an excellent example of how two once-warring giant IT corporations are meeting each other halfway for the sake of the interests of their clients.

Installing Windows 7 on MacBook Pro

InstallationWindows-7 onMacBookPro

First: Why is this needed? Why do you need Windows 7 on MacBook Pro?

The answer is very simple. I constantly use Microsoft Access, as well as several programs for customs clearance of goods; there are no analogues for Mac OS and there are no plans for them.

This article does not cover the general principles of installing Windows on Mac. It describes the steps I had to perform on my early 2008 MacBook Pro Model Number A 1260 during the installation of Windows -7, and also contains comments, links and installation guides for all the necessary components that will be needed for successful and high-quality work your Mac computer in Windows environment.

You can read in detail about installing Windows XP on a Mac for the first time in the manual that is included with the sale. If English language causes you difficulties, then look for information about it on the Internet. There are many useful articles about this in Russian.

However, I will draw your attention to the most common mistake that almost everyone makes who installs Windows on their Mac for the first time, and then cannot understand why the system does not want to start, even if the installation is done from a licensed disk. This error is as follows: During the installation process, Windows prompts you to format the disk on which the installation will be performed. Despite the fact that Boot Camp has already partitioned the disk of your MacBook and formatted the required partition, IT IS NECESSARY TO FORMAT THE PARTITION DURING INSTALLATION! Otherwise, the system will not start under any circumstances!(unless this is the first time you've installed Windows on your MacBook).

We will now look at the process of installing the Windows-7 operating system on a MacBook Pro using the 32-bit one as an example, since practice has shown that 32-bit Windows-7 on a MacBook Pro works faster.

Some of the information for writing this material was taken from this article:

Required tools and programs:

1. Windows -7 installation disk.

2. The first disk from the set that came with your MacBook Pro, which contains Boot Camp and drivers for Windows XP. Don’t despair that these are old programs and drivers (as was the case in my case), all this will be needed and will work as it should, I promise you.

5. External mouse (preferably).

NO DOWNLOAD NEEDED! Just waste your time and traffic!

System installation:

Turn on the MacBook, insert the installation disk with Windows-7, hold down the key "alt" and install the system. There is nothing more to write about here.

Important! Correct installation of drivers:

Windows -7 installation is complete. And what do we see:

The keyboard does not work properly. Apple function keys do not work and CD cannot be ejected.

The trackpad does not work properly. Doesn't work even in right-click mode (two fingers on the trackpad and pressing the button doesn't open context menu)

Sound doesn't work. Even though when checking the equipment, the audio playback indicators show that sound is being played, there is still no sound. Characteristic sign its absence - the headphone jack is illuminated from the inside with red light.

This means that you need to install all the drivers for your MacBook Pro to run its hardware in a Windows 7 environment. There are several secrets here. We will talk about them now. So attention:

1. Installing Boot Camp:

a) We take the first disk from the MacBook kit. Directly run setup with of this disk will not succeed, an error will appear "The installer detected unexpected error when installing this package. The package may not have been installed correctly. Error code 2229".

When you run any of the files from the disk directory: Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple, (for example, " AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller") we get an error "DPInst.exe cannot run on your operating system". The second error occurs due to the Russian interface language. After all, the Russian version of Windows-7 simply does not exist and will not exist. It will be like in Vista, just official Russification. That's why:

b) IT IS NECESSARY TO CHANGE THE INTERFACE LANGUAGE TO ENGLISH DURING INSTALLATION. THIS MUST BE DONE, OTHERWISE THE DRIVERS WILL NOT BE INSTALLED!!!

c) Create on drive C:\ new folder and copy the entire contents of the CD into it. You will have to use an external mouse or keyboard shortcuts (select all); (copy); (insert).

Keep in mind that it is currently possible to remove the Windows -7 installation disk only using an external mouse, or by temporarily booting into the Mac.

d) If you haven’t downloaded it yet, then download the patched Boot Camp from here: http://www.speedyshare.com/404462147.html. There are three folders in the archive with the Boot Camp LIMO patch. We need three files from it: both files from the folder " AppleBootCamp 2.1”: BootCamp And BootCamp 64, as well as a file from the folder “ Apple Boot Camp 2.1 32-bitlatencyissue”: KbdMgr. We take these three files and copy them, replacing them, into the created folder in the Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple directory.

e) WE MAKE SURE THAT THE INTERFACE LANGUAGE IS INSTALLED IN ENGLISH. We launch one of the BootCamp files in accordance with the bit depth installed system and perform the installation. ATTENTION, IMPORTANT: After Boot installation Camp, before clicking the “finish” button and restarting the system, be sure to replace the KbdMgr file in the directory: C :\Program Files\Boot Camp with the file from the patch!!! (in a 64-bit environment, according to the author of the patch, this does not need to be done).

The first stage has been completed. Now you can reboot. After the reboot, all devices will appear in Device Manager. Almost all the missing keyboard and trackpad functions will appear. However, not all of them are what we would like. Now you can switch to the Russian interface language. But I wouldn't recommend it yet. Let's continue:

2. Installing an updated Trackpad driver:

In a Windows environment, clicking on the trackpad on a MacBook Pro with one finger (left mouse button) and two fingers (right button) does not cause any reaction. This was the case until recently. This problem has now been resolved. An updated Trackpad driver for Windows-XP-Vista has appeared on the Apple website. We will use it and add the missing functions. True, you have to do a little magic, but it’s even useful. If you have not downloaded it yet, then download the updated driver here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Multi_Touch_Trackpad_Update_for_Windows_XP___Vista. Looking ahead a little, I’ll say that to install this updated driver in Windows-7 you will definitely need Universal Extractor. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, download it here: http://www.legroom.net/software/uniextract and install it.

Have you downloaded the driver? Then try to install it and you will see that it either does not fit your computer (designed for models from late 2008) or does not fit your operating system, so you need to unpack it using Universal Extractor. When installing Universal Extractor, select the default language “Russian”. After installing Universal Ex tractor, click on the executable file “ AppleMTTUpdate” right-click and select “UniExtract here.” The executable file will be unpacked into two folders " AppleMultitouchTrackpad" And " AppleMultitouchTrackpad64" Let's remember their location. Now let's go to Device Manager, open "HID Devices", in which we see "Apple Multitouch" and "Apple Multitouch Mouse".

FOR BOTH we update drivers, by specifying manually the path to one of the above folders obtained during unpacking in accordance with the system bit depth. Drivers are installed without problems this way. We check that the drivers are installed correctly: In the properties of both devices, the driver must have version 2.1.2.100.

DO NOT TOUCH THE BOOT CAM P SETTINGS YET, BUT BE SURE TO REBOOT FIRST, otherwise not all functions will work.

After starting the system, select Boot Camp in the control panel. (or right-click on the Boot Camp icon in the system tray and select “Control Panel”). Open the “Trackpad” tab that appears and set the necessary options. The translation into Russian is not entirely correct, so I recommend looking at the English version. That's it, now the trackpad responds to touches with one and two fingers, as if clicking the left/right mouse button!

3. Installing the Audio Driver (we solve problems with sound).

So we have no sound. The driver is installed, the speaker indicators blink when checking, but there is no sound. For some reason, the headphone jack is illuminated from the inside with red light.

In order for sound to appear, you will need an updated version of the Realtek driver, which already understands what Windows-7 is. You need to download it from here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads. On the page that opens, select the link: “ High Definition Audio Codecs (Software) »

Or a direct link (but sometimes it doesn't work): http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false .

In the window that appears, check the box, agreeing with everything that is offered and click “Next”.

In the window that opens, select required file Vista,Windows-7Driver (32/64bits)Driveronly (Executablefile) and press " GO" opposite one of the sites: Site1, Site2 or Site3, but not the opposite Express, so as not to enter unnecessary passwords later.

After downloading the specified driver, you just need to install it. And the sound will appear! Reboot.

4. Installing Video Driver.

Yes, the video card driver has been installed and it works. But trust me, its performance is not great. Therefore, I strongly recommend installing the latest video driver for NVidia video cards. You need to download it from the manufacturer’s website, namely from here: http://www.nvidia.ru/object/geforce_notebook_win7_186.03_whql_ru.html.

Measure performance before and after installing the driver. The difference is obvious:

Now Windows 7 is installed correctly on your MacBook Pro.

Vadim Yurasov.

Over the past few years, laptops and Apple computers (phones and tablet computers, of course, are no less popular, but we’re not talking about them now). But having bought an Apple computer or laptop, some people are faced with the fact that they absolutely cannot work on the new Mac OS operating system or they simply need Windows in addition to this operating system. And here many people have a question - How to install Windows on a Mac computer/laptop? You will find out the answer to this question if you read the article.

The simplest and affordable way Installing Windows on a Mac is to use the Boot Camp program. Boot Camp is special application from Apple to install WindowsXP/Windows7, by breaking hard drive into 2 partitions, one for each system. Switching from one system to another is possible only by restarting the computer.

In order to install Windows on your Mac, you will need:

1 MacBook Rro/ MacBook Air/ IMac with Mac OS installed;

2 USB storage(flash drive (at least 4 Gb) or external hard disk)/DVD disk (from USB storage device (flash drive or external hard disk) transfer all the information, since in the future everything on the media will be deleted after formatting);

3 Disk with the Windows7 operating system or its ISO image;

4 This article and about an hour of free time.

Attention!!! If you are going to install Windows with via USB flash drives on Mac late 2013 and newer (they use all USB 3.0 ports) you need to use a USB 3.0 flash drive. Otherwise, when installing Windows, you will not have active USB ports and a wireless keyboard.

Turn on your Mac and install Latest updates. To do this, click on the apple (left, upper corner) and select "Software Update".

After you have installed all the updates, proceed to the next step, launch Boot Camp. To do this, click on the search (magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner) and enter there "Boot Camp", among the found ones, click on "Boot Camp Assistant"".

In the window that opens Boot Camp Assistant, read the information and click "Continue".

In the next window, you need to select settings for installing Windows 7, or more precisely, how you will install.

Installation on Mac Windows7 using disk

Installation on Mac Windows7 using USB flash drive/external hard drive

If you have a DVD with Windows 7 operating system, you need to select two last paragraph, namely- Download the latest Windows support software from Apple(loads drivers for Windows7) and Install Windows7(allows you to determine the size of the volume where Windows7 will be installed and when rebooting, it boots from the DVD).

Leave the default folder name WindowsSupport All drivers will be saved in it and we select the media on which all files will be saved (in this example, it is a USB flash drive).

Then enter your computer administrator credentials and click "Add Helper".

After this, the driver download process will begin.

If you have an ISO image on your computer, in this case you must leave all the checkboxes. In particular, for MacBook Air this method is very convenient, since it does not DVD drive and installation from a USB flash drive/USB hard drive will be more reasonable.

Button "Choose" indicate the path to ISO image Windows7.

A warning window will then appear indicating that your drive/ USB device will be formatted and all information will be deleted from it.

After this, the USB drive will be formatted and installation files and drivers will be copied to it.

The next step is to specify the amount of disk space under Windows7; to do this, simply move the slider and determine the partition size for the Windows operating system and click "Install".

After this, the computer/laptop will reboot and the Windows7 installation process will begin upon loading (it is no different from installation on any other computer).

The only thing I would like to add is that when choosing a volume on which the operating system will be installed, be extremely careful not to delete existing sections. Just format the BOOTCAMP partition and start installing Windows7.

After installing Windows7, go to the USB drive, you will see a folder in it WindowSupport(it contains drivers for Windows7), run the file setup.exe.

In the next window, read the License Agreement, accept it and click "Further".

After this, you will be prompted to additionally install Apple Software Update, you can leave a checkmark and click "Install".

After this, the installation process of all drivers will begin, it does not require your participation, just when it is finished, a window will appear indicating that the installation is complete. Press the button "Complete".

This post was written not for the sake of holivar, but simply to share experience. I’ll answer the main part of the questions right away:
- Why is this necessary?
- It's just necessary!
- There is MacOS, why is there Windows on a Mac?
- Everyone chooses for themselves what is more convenient for them to work with! I like Apple hardware, but I'm used to working on Windows!
- There is virtual machines?
- They work slowly!
- There is a Bootcamp!?
- There is little space on the Air, and Windows alone takes up about 30-40GB, with all the software!
Answered all the questions?! If you are still wondering how to do this, then welcome to the post...

If you have an external CD drive, this post may not be for you, here I will tell you how to install Windows on a MacBook Air without a drive.
In order to pull this all off, we need:

  • 2 USB flash drives (one for Windows 7 (from 4GB), the other for drivers (from 1GB))
  • 1 PC - with Windows 7
  • Internet
  • and of course the brand new Macbook Air 2010 Late

Stage 1. Preparing a bootable flash drive with Windows 7

First, let's prepare the flash drive and make it bootable. To do this, we need a PC with Windows 7 and a Windows disk (preferably x64, since the laptop supports x64).

Now we have a USB flash drive formatted in FAT32, which is active, i.e. may become bootable.
In order to install the bootloader, you need to do this in CMD:

  1. F: (my CD-ROM is designated by the letter F:, yours may be different)
  2. cd\boot\
  3. bootsect /nt60 E: (where E: is the name of the flash drive)
All! Now our flash drive is bootable with the Windows 7 bootloader installed, all that remains is to copy all the files from the Windows 7 CD to this flash drive, this can be done with Explorer, or in any other way convenient for you.

Step 3. Make Macbook See USB Flash with Windows

All my attempts to get the Macbook to see the bootable flash drive failed, so I had to use Google.
It turns out I'm not the only one who needs pure Windows/Linux on a Macbook, and there is a program for this rEFIt.
Download it from the official website: . I set myself latest version 0.14. It is installed as standard, like any application in MacOS.
After installation, you need to restart your computer 2 times. On the second reboot, you need to hold down the right-option and a similar menu will appear (USB Flash with Windows should be in the MacBook):

You will have a MacOS icon and a Windows icon by default. We need to select Windows.
After launching the installer, entering the key, select “full installation”.
A list of partitions on which the SSD is allocated will be displayed:

I will delete all sections! And we create new ones, with creation of Windows will offer, or rather order, to create system partition at 100MB.
I divided the disk into 100MB(), 40GB (system), and the rest.
Once everything is installed, the computer will reboot and Windows will start, at the beginning, it will probably hang on a white screen for a long time, and look for the MacOS partition, this will be cured after installing the driver, and the Bootcamp application in Windows, to quickly find the desired partition, hold down the left option and selects the Windows drive.
After the installation is complete, install the drivers from the second flash drive and reboot. After the reboot, go to Bootcamp, select the disk for Windows boot and click reboot now. ALL! Now you won't see White screen turn on the Macbook for about a minute.

A little about how it all works

After working for 2 days on a brand new MacBook, I appreciated all the advantages of an SSD. Windows loads for 10-15 seconds (from pressing the power button until all the icons in the system are loaded)
Word opens in 1 second
Photoshop CS5 - the first time in 4 seconds, if you turn it off and on again for 2 seconds (most likely due to ReadyBoost, and all sorts of new features in Windows 7)
The application response time is instantaneous.
And all this with a combination of Core2Duo, DDR3, Multi-touchpad, 1440x900...
In a word, I am very pleased! And it doesn’t matter what Windows or MacOS costs, because the MacBook Air 2010 Late is an excellent piece of hardware!
Happy New Year and good gifts to everyone!
